RPG Games 2022: The Best and Most Anticipated. 2022 is shaping up to be a great year because there are so many games to look forward to. In the recent Game Awards season, several of them have already been confirmed to release in February next year! But in this article, we’re going to narrow down the list by taking a look at the RPG Games 2022: The Best and Most Anticipated.
RPG Games 2022: The Best and Most Anticipated
In the past couple of years, we’ve been treated with a slew of great RPGs like the infamous Skyrim. Who can forget how many times this game has been released on multiple platforms for a decade? Or Divinity: Original Sin 2 and the ways in which it redefined the turn-based combat system? Let’s not forget FromSoftware’s titular games that spurred an entirely new Soulslike genre. All these are worth celebrating because they’ve brought players together whether it’s due to the stories they tell, the nuances in their combat styles, or the intricacies of their gameplay features.
The RPG titles we’ll be discussing consist of games we’ve been covering in the past couple of months. But you’ll also notice entirely new ones that we’re looking forward to learning more about. Without further ado, these are our Most Anticipated RPG Games of 2022!
Elden Ring (February 2022)
Ever since Elden Ring was first announced in June 2019, players have been talking about it nonstop. The shattering of the Elden Ring captured the attention of Soulslike fans in a way that no other game did. To make matters more interesting, it was also confirmed that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the infamous creator behind the Dark Souls franchise, collaborated with George R. R. Martin to create FromSoftware’s upcoming fantasy ARPG. Fast forward to 2021, we were treated with a demo that made us more excited for the game.
Elden Ring focuses on providing players with the utmost freedom. Not only can you freely explore the rich fantasy world over and over again, but you’re also presented with more Skill diversity. This is more of an RPG than any of the previous FromSoftware games because of the new features that have been introduced. There’s flexibility in terms of the numerous Builds you can come up with due to the Weapon skill swap and upgrade systems. You’re also able to engage in summoning the spirits of slain enemies to assist you in Combat.
This time around, the developers have challenged themselves further by turning Elden Ring into a massive open-world game. You have to constantly explore and come back to the Locations you’ve already gone to because you’ll always discover new things in return. What makes exploration worthwhile are the secrets you uncover as well as the Lore and characters you encounter. The partnership of Miyazaki and Martin has certainly added depth to Elden Ring because of how comprehensive and well-balanced the storytelling is.
But the magic behind the game doesn’t end there. It definitely draws inspiration from previous Soulslike titles, bringing them together and putting them in one neat box. Because of this, the combat and gameplay experience feel nostalgic, which fans of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro will immediately recognize.
Elden Ring will be released via PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 on February 25, 2022. You can refer to our Elden Ring Impressions to know more about the game.
Baldur’s Gate 3 (2022)
Time and time again attempts to create a sequel to the original Baldur’s Gate games have been futile. How can you replicate a beloved series while retaining the qualities that have made it special? Also, there’s the challenge of faithfully adapting the Dungeons and Dragons ruleset into video game format. But in the late 2010s, while developing Divinity: Original Sin 2, Wizards of the Coast saw Larian Studios’ potential and asked if they were interested in making Baldur’s Gate 3. The rest is history. Baldur’s Gate 3 was then released in Early Access in October 2020.
One of the biggest Combat changes was the switch from real-time with pause that the classics were famous for, to the turn-based system. It was implemented to closely adhere to D&D 5th Edition’s tabletop mechanics. This angered some fans but it was a refreshing modification for others, especially those who enjoyed Divinity: Original Sin 2.
The game features multiple Classes based on the Player’s Handbook including but not limited to Rangers, Druids, Fighters, and Sorcerers. It also has intriguing plotlines involving Mind Flayers, and allusions to the Dead Three Gods, as well as well-written dialogue among characters.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is shaping up to be one of the best CRPGs to come out next year, largely due to Larian’s RPG experience and how receptive they are to player feedback. In one of the recent major Patch Notes, they’ve altered the game’s overall art style to depict grittier characters and environments, in line with Baldur’s Gate’s dark narratives. Additionally, these developers continue to leverage their expertise in giving players absolute freedom to extensively explore Faerun and to come up with unique Builds.
While no official release date has been announced, we are reasonably sure Baldur’s Gate 3 will launch sometime in 2022. So far, it will be released on PC, macOS, and Google Stadia, but we’d be surprised if it didn’t eventually come to consoles as well. You can check out our Baldur’s Gate 3 Impressions to know what we think of Early Access so far!
Starfield (November 2022)
From the creators of The Elder Scrolls franchise and Fallout 4 comes a new ARPG set in The Settled Systems in the 2300s known as Starfield. Starfield is Bethesda Game Studios’ next huge project, running on their new Creation Engine 2. Although not much detail has been provided about the respective upgrades, we’re hoping that the RPG will also be moddable like its predecessors.
The events in Starfield happen decades after the Colony War, which pitted two factions against one another, particularly the United Colonies and Freestar Collective. As a member of the Constellation in the current time, your goal is to explore the universe beyond Earth.
As confirmed by game director Todd Howard, Starfield is pretty much Skyrim in space but with more dialogue. Not only do you have plenty of options to customize your character, which can be played in the first or third-person perspective, but you’ll also be engaging with multiple factions throughout your space journey. Additionally, you have to learn to deal with threats such as mercenaries and religious zealots.
Meanwhile, Combat is purely speculative at the moment. Besides the shuttle’s weapons and shields interfaces shown in the trailer, it hasn’t been thoroughly discussed.
Starfield will be released on the same date as Skyrim, specifically on November 11, 2022, via PC and Xbox Series X|S.
Lost Ark (February 2022)
Next up is the highly anticipated free-to-play MMO ARPG, Lost Ark, developed by Smilegate RPG. Lost Ark has been available to players in Korea, Russia, and Japan for a few years now. And next year, publisher Amazon Game Studios will be releasing the game to North America and European regions.
What makes Lost Ark unique compared to other MMORPGs is it features Classes that don’t follow the Holy Trinity formula. So you won’t find a pure healer, damage dealer, or tank in any of the characters. Instead, they’re all capable of dealing decent damage. However, some classes like the Paladin and Bard are better suited for support-related plays, while others such as the Shadowhunter, inflict greater damage. Furthermore, customizing your Skills is straightforward, and doing so significantly alters your playstyle.
The game is lauded for its exhilarating fast-paced ARPG combat because of how fluid it feels. Lost Ark also has interesting dungeons, which mechanically differ from one another. This makes every encounter exciting to participate in and complete.
Lost Ark will be available for PC on February 11, 2022. You may read our Lost Ark Closed Beta Impressions for more details.
King Arthur: Knight’s Tale (February 2022)
King Arthur: Knight’s Tale is developed by NeocoreGames who made the King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame series in 2009. Not only that, but they also have an impressive list of tactical turn-based RPGs under their belt including The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing and Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr.
In King Arthur: Knight’s Tale, the objective is to rebuild Camelot by taking Missions in Avalon. You’ll also be able to recruit Heroes and improve their abilities in the process. What NeocoreGames nails in this iteration is its fun, strategic, and challenging gameplay loop when it comes to the Combat and Skill system.
Similar to classic RPGs, King Arthur: Knight’s Tale has well-written storylines and characters. The choices you make will also have lasting repercussions on your party. Having opposing morals and beliefs will tear you down but it can improve Loyalty with others.
King Arthur: Knight’s Tale will leave Early Access on February 15, 2022. It’ll be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. You can also check out our King Arthur: Knight’s Tale Preview for more thoughts on the game.
Salt and Sacrifice (Early 2022)
Over the past few years, indie developers have been paving the way to introduce remarkable games. One such Metroidvania Soulslike gem that has made an indelible mark on us is Salt and Sanctuary, created by Ska Studios. Salt and Sanctuary has an impeccable set of Weapons and Skills to customize, much like in Path of Exile. It also features punishing and complex yet satisfying 2D Combat mechanics.
In Q1 of 2022, the same developers will be bringing the sequel to this beloved game to life. Salt and Sacrifice is expected to make the world feel larger. As a Marked Inquisitor, your job is to hunt down Mages who summon minions to destroy everything in their midst. The game has a variety of melee and ranged Classes to choose from as well as stats and Weapons to upgrade, which can greatly change your playstyle. Encounters against Bosses continue to be interesting and familiar as well.
One of the best improvements in Salt and Sacrifice is the fully-fledged Multiplayer Mode. This allows you and your friend, whether via Online or local play, to share your characters’ progress and to finish the game together. Alternatively, you can ask for help from another player by summoning them.
Salt and Sacrifice will be released in early 2022 via the PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. To know what our thoughts are on the demo, check our Salt and Sacrifice Impressions.
Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin (March 2022)
The announcement of Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin in E3 2021 came out as a surprise that left people confused about the game’s true nature and inspiration. Developed by Square Enix and Team Ninja, creator of the Nioh Series, it’s considered as a reinterpretation of Final Fantasy I set in a dark fantasy world.
Stranger of Paradise is an ARPG that incorporates similar Combat styles as Nioh but with enhancements. You’re able to perform a couple of moves like parrying and dodging while managing your energy gauge. You can also execute several Combo Abilities that are distinct based on the Jobs or classes you choose. Furthermore, the game allows you to swap between two jobs, letting you efficiently modify your playstyle with the single press of a button.
Stranger of Paradise is a welcome treat especially for fans who have enjoyed Nioh and Final Fantasy. It’s an amazing throwback to these classics that aims to introduce new and interesting mechanics into the picture.
Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin will be released on March 18, 2022, via PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. You can read our Stranger of Paradise Impressions for more details.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink (2022)
The Granblue Fantasy franchise is a recognized turn-based JRPG in mobile gaming. It’s notably popular for the collaboration between composer Nobuo Uematsu and art director Hideo Minaba who both previously worked on Final Fantasy V and VI.
Back in 2016, Cygames shared that an extension of the series in the same universe was already being worked on. Some characters from the original Granblue Fantasy were also intended to make an appearance.
What we know so far based on the recent Trailer shown at the Granblue Fantasy Festival is that Granblue Fantasy: Relink is set in a sea of clouds called Zegagrande Skydom. You’ll be able to choose between two main characters, as well as companions and allies to join your adventures. You’ll also meet Lyria who will change your fate but not much has been revealed beyond that. Furthermore, the game will have single-player and multiplayer modes so you have the option to play with three other friends. Multiplayer mode can only be accessed after completing a couple of main quests first.
Besides the beautiful visuals and soundtrack, diverse biomes, and snappy and flashy combat against intimidating monsters, we’re left to wonder how the rest of the mechanics will fit into Granblue Fantasy: Relink.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink will be available in 2022 on PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. The planned release date is anticipated to be revealed during the anniversary livestream in March 2022.
Hogwarts Legacy (2022)
The Harry Potter books and movies have remained influential to this day so it’s delightful to hear about the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy, which expands the universe further. Hogwarts Learegacy is an open-world ARPG developed by Avalanche Software and is primarily set on the grounds of Hogwarts during the 1800s. As a student gifted in wielding Ancient Magic, your goal is to prevent the looming threat that can ultimately destroy the wizarding world.
In true RPG fashion, your decisions matter as they will determine who you truly are. You’ll also have the ability to upgrade skills and spells, craft potions, tame wild beasts, and choose the companions who will aid you in combat. Finally, you’ll venture into familiar locations such as the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade Village to complete missions.
Hogwarts Legacy is planned to be released on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 in 2022.
Alaloth: Champions of the Four Kingdoms (2022)
Bringing back the amazing isometric RPGs of yesteryear is no easy feat. It’s difficult to imagine how popular games such as Ultima, Diablo, and Baldur’s Gate could be recreated well. However, one such game, namely Alaloth: Champions of the Four Kingdoms, is attempting to relive classic RPGs from the 90s and early 2000s while introducing fresh gameplay systems.
Alaloth, which is developed by Gamera Interactive, is set in the high-fantasy Kingdoms of Plamen each governed by humans, orcs, dwarves, and elves. The game features immersive storytelling and CRPG, ARPG, and Soulslike elements, making it complex and unique. For instance, Alaloth’s hardcore combat forces you to learn how to gain an advantage over smart enemy AIs. You also have to master the ability to parry, block, and attack at the right moment. Furthermore, mixing and matching skills from multiple paths will enable you to notably change your Build. Since the corresponding skill slots are limited, you have to choose wisely.
Completing Quests and exploring the world are essential since you need to search for hero books to improve your character. Traveling can take days depending on who you encounter, the terrain’s difficulty, and the type of mount you have.
If you’ve been meaning to play a challenging and unique RPG that utilizes classic and modern gameplay mechanics, then this may be for you. Alaloth: Champions of the Four Kingdoms is set to be released on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch sometime in 2022. For more details, check out our Alaloth Impressions.
